Loft Party Wall
What is a loft party wall?
Semi-detached and terraced houses generally share at least one wall within their loft with a neighbour, these shared walls are known as Party Walls. In many old built terraced houses and semi-detached houses there are no walls to separate the lofts between the houses or maybe only one wall, meaning most of the time it is very easy to access your neighbour’s loft. A loft party wall is a wall that is put in place directly between two houses, intended to separate your loft from any of your neighbouring lofts.
What are the benefits of having a Loft party wall installed?
The benefits of having a party wall installed in your loft separates yours and your neighbours loft spaces which means this is better security and your loft can not be easily accessed by any of your neighbours, this also reduces the risk of any fire hazards or a fire spreading from any neighbouring lofts. A party wall is also beneficial to have installed before completing any works or loft conversions so that you are always working within your property and separates from the neighbouring lofts, then you can go ahead with making your loft into extra storage space or a comfortable living space with out the worry of any neighbours able to access this.
Important Information regarding Party walls
Before carrying out any works that may affect your party wall or having a party wall installed you do always need consent from the households involved, as party walls are co-owned by both owners of the adjoining properties. A written party wall agreement is the best option so that you are always covered in case of any issues/disagreements between both parties as per the Party wall act 1996.
